The arithmetic
How your life path number is worked out
Numerology reduces a birth date to a single digit, and that digit is your life path number — the oldest and most widely used figure in the practice. The maths is simple enough to do on paper, which is part of why it has survived.
Doing it by hand
Reduce the day, the month and the year separately, then add the three results and reduce once more. Take 14 August 1985. The day, 14, becomes 1 + 4 = 5. The month, 8, stays 8. The year, 1985, becomes 1 + 9 + 8 + 5 = 23, and 2 + 3 = 5. Now add the three: 5 + 8 + 5 = 18, and 1 + 8 = 9. That birthday is a life path 9. Reducing each part separately, rather than adding every digit in one go, is the method most numerologists use — the two agree far more often than not, but where they differ this is the one to trust.
Why 11, 22 and 33 are left alone
Those three are the master numbers, and the convention is to stop rather than reduce them to 2, 4 and 6. They are read as the same energy pitched higher and harder to live with: 11 the intuitive, 22 the builder on a large scale, 33 the teacher. If your total lands on one of them you will often see it written 11/2 or 22/4, which is a way of saying the underlying number is still there underneath.
What the number is good for
A life path describes disposition rather than events — what you tend to reach for, what you find easy, and the particular way you get in your own way. It is one figure among several; the expression number, from your full name at birth, and the birthday number sit alongside it. Each of the twelve paths above names a stone that steadies it, and the same birthday read astrologically is the birth chart tool.
