Greenman Woodwick Candles

A good wooden-wick candle doesn't have to cost a fortune.

The Greenman range is £9.94 per candle, with soy wax, a wooden wick, a green glass jar and cork lid, and measures around 9 x 7cm. There are twelve fragrances, all with a natural, woodland feel, including Sage & Mintwood, Moss & Mist, Cedar Citrus, Twilight Vine, Fig & Cassis and Wolf's Moon.

The wooden wick is the main attraction. Once it's burning properly, you get that gentle crackling sound that makes the candle feel a little more like a tiny fire than simply a scented candle.

The fragrances are fairly easy-going too. They aren't designed to completely take over a room, which makes them a good choice if you like scent but don't want to walk into a cloud of perfume.

At this price, they're also handy gifts to have around. Housewarming, Secret Santa, teacher gifts, a thank-you, or that awkward situation where you realise you're visiting someone tonight and have nothing to take with you.

The green glass jars and cork lids are worth keeping once the wax has gone, too.

For wooden wicks, keep the exposed wick around 3–5mm and snap away the charred section before relighting. On the first burn, allow enough time for the wax to melt across to the glass. This helps the candle burn more evenly rather than creating a deep tunnel down the middle.

If you like the wooden-wick idea but want a larger selection of scents and sizes, have a look at the Agnes + Cat candle collection.
