The calculation uses the same lunar arithmetic as our moon calendar, taken at noon on your birthday. If you were born within a few hours of a phase boundary, read both neighbours and keep the one that sounds like you — the moon won't mind.
What the birth moon is said to mean
Astrologers have read the moon's phase at birth for centuries as a kind of temperament note underneath the star sign — the sign says what you are, the phase says how you go about it. Born under a waxing moon, the lore says, you build; under a waning moon, you distil. Born at the new moon you begin things; at the full moon you feel everything. It's a smaller tradition than the zodiac and an older one than most of what fills a modern horoscope.
