September Birthstone — Lapis Lazuli

September's birthstone is sapphire; the stone that has actually carried the meaning for longer is lapis lazuli — deep blue, flecked with gold pyrite, mined in the same Afghan valleys for six thousand years. It was ground into ultramarine, the most expensive pigment in Renaissance Europe, which is why medieval painters reserved that blue for the Virgin's robe.

Why lapis lazuli suits September

Lapis is the stone of truth and self-expression — the throat and third-eye stone, associated with saying the accurate thing. As a September birthstone it lands well: the month everything goes back to school and work, and the year gets serious again.

What to look for when buying

Look for even, deep blue with gold flecks, not white streaks — the pyrite is desirable, the calcite isn't. And keep it dry: lapis is soft and water damages the polish. Wipe with a dry cloth only.
