March Birthstone — Aquamarine

March has two birthstones, which is more interesting than having one. Aquamarine is the modern choice — pale blue-green beryl, the same mineral family as emerald, named simply for sea water. Bloodstone is the older tradition: dark green jasper flecked with red, and much less polite about it.

Why aquamarine suits March

Aquamarine was a sailor's stone long before it was a birthstone, carried for calm water and safe passage — fitting for the month when the year turns and the weather can't decide. Bloodstone was the courage stone, for endurance rather than serenity. Between them they cover most of what March is actually like.

What to look for when buying

Aquamarine's colour is subtle by nature; anything a vivid swimming-pool blue has usually had help. Bloodstone is the more forgiving buy — the flecking varies wildly piece to piece, and the character is in the variation.

The full guide to Aquamarine covers its chakra, care and everyday uses. Born this month, you'll also fall under Pisces and Aries — each has its own stones.
