Aquamarine Meaning, Uses & Care

Aquamarine is beryl — the same mineral as emerald — coloured sea-blue by iron. The name is Latin, "water of the sea", and Roman sailors carried it as a talisman for exactly that. Most of today's supply comes from Brazil, in colours from near-clear to deep teal.

What aquamarine is used for

The tradition gives it quiet courage and clear speech — the sailor's calm rather than the warrior's fire. It is the stone for saying things cleanly and kindly, for cooling a hot argument, and for anyone whose fear sits in the throat. Which is its chakra, fittingly. March's birthstone, and Pisces' stone in most lists.

Worn at the throat or carried before the conversations that need steadiness. A beach find of the mind, if not of the beach.

How to care for it

Water-safe; cleanse in the sea or moonlight. Genuinely water-safe — cleanse it in the sea if you ever get the chance, or in moonlight.
