Moonstone is a feldspar with a trick of the light called adularescence — a soft blue-white sheen that moves across the surface as you turn it, caused by light scattering between microscopically thin layers inside the stone. The Romans thought it was solidified moonlight. You can see why.
What moonstone is used for
It belongs to cycles, intuition and beginnings — the traditional stone for anything that ebbs and flows. It has a long association with fertility and with travel by night, and a modern one with fresh starts: people buy it at new jobs, new homes, new years. New moons, in the tradition, are its moment.
Worn more than displayed — a moonstone piece of jewellery keeps the sheen where you can see it. Hold it at the new moon to set the month's intentions, if that is your practice.
How to care for it
Charge on the windowsill at the new moon. Feldspar is softer than quartz and can cleave — don't let it knock about in a pocket with harder stones.
