Shungite Meaning, Uses & Care

Shungite is a black, almost pure-carbon stone found in commercial quantity in one place on Earth: the Karelian shore of Lake Onega in Russia, near the village of Shunga. It is ancient — around two billion years old — and peculiar: some grades contain fullerenes, football-shaped carbon molecules, which is more than can be said for any other rock in this shop.

What shungite is used for

Peter the Great built Russia's first spa around shungite springs, and purification has been its reputation ever since. The modern tradition adds EMF shielding — a claim we pass on as tradition, not physics. It is bought as a grounding stone for desks full of screens.

A pyramid or cube by the router or monitor is the contemporary custom. As a grounding stone it works the old-fashioned way: dark, heavy, present.

How to care for it

Water-safe; sun-charge to renew. Water-safe — it was famous as a water stone — and sun-charging suits it. The raw grade leaves black traces on hands; polished does not.
