Jasmine absolute, 10ml, from Jasminum officinale, the evergreen climber of India and China whose small white star-shaped flowers open after dark and are picked by hand at night, when the scent is at its strongest. Jasmine is one of the costliest materials in perfumery because the flowers yield so little: it takes thousands of hand-picked blossoms to make a single bottle, so it is sold in 10ml and used a drop at a time. The scent is heady, warm, honeyed and intensely floral, with the slightly animal depth under it that separates true jasmine from a synthetic. Sold undiluted, for blending into a carrier oil, adding a drop to a diffuser, or scenting a candle or a massage blend. In aromatherapy tradition it is the oil of confidence, sensuality and the easing of a low mood.
