The clove candle from Agnes and Cat's Herb Garden range: natural soy wax scented with clove, poured into a rustic terracotta-style ceramic pot and fitted with a wooden wick that crackles softly as it burns, like a very small fire. Clove is warm, dry and spicy, the scent of mulled wine and of an orange studded for Christmas, and in a candle it makes a room feel heated before the heating has caught up. It is the candle for slow evenings from October onwards, for a kitchen table or a reading corner, and the terracotta pot means it looks like a planted herb on the windowsill when it is not lit, and that is the idea of the range. Agnes and Cat pour in small batches in Yorkshire, and soy wax burns cooler and cleaner than paraffin, with no soot on the pot. Trim the wooden wick to about 5mm before each burn and it stays even.
