The mint candle from Agnes and Cat's Herb Garden range: soy wax scented with a crisp, cooling mint, poured into a rustic terracotta-style pot with a wooden wick and set in a plain black metal stand that raises it slightly off the table. Mint is the clean one of the three scents, the smell of a bruised leaf in a garden, and it does for a kitchen or a work desk what opening a window does: it clears the air and sharpens the room. It is the candle to burn after cooking, in a home office in the afternoon, or in a hallway that has gone stale. The wooden wick crackles as it burns and gives a wide, even pool of wax. Poured in small batches in Yorkshire, in soy wax that burns cooler and cleaner than paraffin. Unlit, it passes for a potted herb, and that is the charm of the range.
