A fraction of the price of the same stone as tumbles
A kilo of amethyst chips, the small tumbled fragments that crystal grids, resin casting, candle making and plant pots all run on. The chips are roughly 5 to 15mm, polished smooth, and the colour runs from pale lilac to deep purple across the bag, so a handful shows the whole range of the stone. Bought by the kilo they cost a fraction of what the same stone costs as single tumbles, so makers and shops buy this size. Uses that come up again and again: a layer in the base of a terrarium, filling a bowl on a table, pressing into candle tops, topping up a vase, or building out the lines of a grid. Amethyst is read in crystal practice as calming and clearing, so a bowl of it goes by the bed.
