A four-string soprano ukulele made by hand in Indonesia from sonokeling, the Indonesian rosewood, with a natural sunburst finish that shades from honey at the centre to dark brown at the edges. It comes strung and ready to play, and at 824g it is light enough for a child to hold and small enough to go in a rucksack.
Sonokeling gives a warmer, rounder tone than the laminate most cheap ukuleles are made from, so this one sounds like an instrument rather than a toy. Four strings and a short neck make it the easiest stringed instrument to start on: three chords cover most songs, and a beginner is playing one within an afternoon.
It suits a child's first instrument, a travelling player, or a sound corner alongside drums and singing bowls. Keep it out of direct sun and tune it before each play; new strings stretch for a week or two.
