Backflow Incense Burner Waterfall - Mountain Scape Ceramic Cone Holder

Wash away a chaotic workday with a hypnotic waterfall of soothing smoke

Turn your chaotic desk into a mesmerising focal point for deep focus

  • Smoke falls instead of rising, running down the slopes and spilling over the rim like a waterfall
  • Takes backflow cones only, the hollow kind, not sticks or ordinary cones
  • Matte charcoal ceramic that reads as an ornament when nothing is burning
  • Wide dish catches the ash, so it wipes clean when cool
  • Burn a single cone at a time, on a heatproof mat, clear of polished wood

Experience an effortless mental reset without leaving your favourite reading chair

Backflow burners work the opposite way round to ordinary incense. The cone is hollow, so the heavier smoke sinks instead of climbing, and finds the lowest point it can reach. On this one that means down the mountainside, along the valleys between the smaller peaks, and over the edge of the dish in a slow curtain. It is genuinely hard to look away from, which is the point of owning one.

It takes a few minutes to settle. Light the tip of the cone, let it burn for about twenty seconds, then blow the flame out and set it over the hole at the summit. If the smoke rises instead of falling, the cone has not caught properly yet, or there is a draught in the room — close the door, wait, and it finds its way down. It only works with backflow cones, which have a hollow channel through the middle. Ordinary incense cones and sticks have no channel, so the smoke simply rises and the effect is lost. We stock around twenty scents of backflow cones, from white sage and palo santo to sandalwood and lavender.

A few practical notes, because ceramic and hot resin ask for a little care. Use one cone at a time. Stand it on a heatproof mat, and keep it off painted, varnished or polished surfaces, since backflow smoke leaves an oily residue that marks them. Keep it on a flat, stable surface and never leave it burning unattended or within reach of children and pets. Wipe the dish out when it cools and the residue lifts straight off.
