A 50mm sphere on its stand for a desk or a study shelf
Afghan lapis is the lapis lazuli that painters ground into ultramarine, and this 50mm sphere shows why: a deep, saturated blue, flecked with gold pyrite and veined with white calcite, polished all round so the whole surface catches the light. Lapis from Afghanistan is the benchmark for the stone, and the colour on this piece is the real thing, not dyed howlite. It stands on its own base at about 6.5cm tall, a size that reads as a proper object on a desk or a shelf rather than a trinket. Every sphere is cut from a different piece of rock, so the pyrite flecks and calcite veins vary. Lapis has been the stone of wisdom and truth since Egypt, worn by scribes and pharaohs alike.
