Black manganese dendrites branch through pale limestone like ink bleeding into silk, and nobody laid down a single stroke of it. The patterns were not painted or carved: they formed naturally over millions of years, which is why these stones have been collected in China as painting stones for centuries.
The rock is a fine-grained limestone rich in iron oxide from Guangxi province, and the intricate, tree-like formations are manganese dendrites, crystals that grew in the fractures of the stone.
