Guohua Picture Stone - Large Landscape - Natural Chinese Stone
Transform a blank shelf into a sprawling winter scene that invites deep thought
Anchor your room with a heavy piece of ancient art that requires zero upkeep
- Natural artwork nobody painted: manganese dendrites grown inside the limestone
- The wide landscape cut gives the branching room to run edge to edge
- Every stone is its own scene, so yours will differ from the photograph
- Fine-grained limestone from Guangxi province, roughly 800g of it
- Wipe it with a dry cloth; that is the whole of its upkeep
Lose your daily stress in a complex natural pattern that shifts in the light
Hold it up to the light and you will see why they are called picture stones. Manganese has grown through the limestone in fine black branches, and what comes out looks like a winter treeline in a heavy morning fog — except nobody drew it. Geologists call the branching dendrites; they form as mineral-rich water seeps along hairline cracks and crystallises.
This is the big landscape cut, so the branching has room to run right across the face. It wants a shelf at eye height, or a desk where you will actually look at it — somewhere the light moves during the day, because the pattern reads differently in morning light than under a lamp. Most people assume it is an ink painting until they pick it up and feel the weight of the rock, around 800g of it.
The patterning is natural manganese — not painted and not carved — which is why no two stones are alike and why yours will not match the photograph exactly. A dry cloth is all the cleaning it ever needs.
Fine-grained limestone rich in iron oxide, from Guangxi province in China. 24.5 x 4 x 15cm.
