A 30 by 10cm mango wood incense tray with a mandala carved across its face, the circular pattern cut into the wood by hand in India and left in the natural warm brown of the timber. The carving is decorative but the tray is a working one: a full-length stick lies along it and the ash falls onto the tray, with room for two or three sticks side by side. Mango wood is heavy, at 350g for this piece, so it does not shift, and it is a sustainable choice, cut from orchard trees past their fruiting years. The mandala has been the symbol of the whole, the cosmos drawn in a circle, in Hindu and Buddhist art for two thousand years, and it makes the tray read as an altar piece as much as an ash catcher. Ash tips out and the carving brushes clean.
