A bowl by the bed that works like a candle with no flame
A kilo of dried lavender flowers from France, the trade-sized bag for anyone who uses lavender by the handful. The flowers are the small purple buds stripped from the stem, strongly fragrant, and they go into lavender sachets for drawers and wardrobes, into soap, candles and bath salts, into tea blends and baking, into eye pillows, and thrown as wedding confetti, where they scent the path as they are trodden. A kilo is a great deal of lavender, enough for a season of making or a market stall of sachets, and the bag keeps for a year or more sealed and out of the light. Lavender is the calming plant in every tradition that uses plants for mood, and a bowl of the loose flowers on a bedside table does for a room what a candle does, without a flame. The buds are clean and even, dried in Provence where the lavender fields are, and they are bought by makers, florists and the occasional bride.
