The medium djembe hits the sweet spot: small enough to tuck under an arm on the way out, big enough for the deep, full low tones a small drum simply cannot produce. The resonance is rich and grounding, and it gives far more power than the small version while staying comfortable to hold and play.
At 40cm tall with an 18cm head it settles between the knees on an ordinary chair, and at 2.29kg you can carry it to a class one-handed. The shell is hand-carved from a single piece of jackfruit wood with traditional linework, finished with rope tuning and the distinctive Soul Sound head design — rope rather than metal bolts, so you can adjust the tension as the skin moves with the weather. Natural wood tones give it a warm, authentic character, as an instrument and as a decorative piece.
It answers gentle tapping and stronger rhythmic playing equally well, which makes it a fine first drum for adults, wellness practitioners and musicians. If you want the same thing with more volume and depth, the large version is 50cm.
