A triangular soapstone oil burner, 11cm tall and 9cm across, with elephants carved into its three faces. The shape is the point: most soapstone burners are round or square, and the three-sided form gives this one a cleaner, more modern outline that sits well in a flat full of straight lines, while the elephant carving and the grey-green veined stone keep it recognisably Indian. It works as every oil burner does, with a few drops of fragrance oil in water in the top dish and a tea light in the chamber below, the candlelight showing through the pierced carving as the scent warms. Soapstone takes heat without cracking and carves finely, and at 492g this one has enough weight to stay put. The elephant is India's symbol of wisdom, patience and luck. Carved by hand, so each piece differs a little. Wipe the dish out while it is still warm.
