Fourteen centimetres for a main altar
A large mango wood bowl carved with a pentagram, the five-pointed star of the four elements and spirit, 14cm across and 7cm tall, made for the altar: a smudge stick rests in it while it smoulders, the ash falls into it, and between smudgings it holds salt, herbs, tumble stones or an offering. The pentagram marks it as a witch's bowl, the one for a Wiccan or witchcraft altar where the Hamsa and the Buddha bowls on the same shelf would say the wrong thing, and the warm wood softens a symbol that reads harshly in black metal. The organic look of mango wood gives an altar a grounded, serene feel, and the wood is dense, warm and cut sustainably from orchard trees past fruiting. The carving is done by hand in India, so each bowl carries its own grain and the star varies a little. This is the large size; the small pentagram bowl is 12cm. At 180g it sits steadily.
Mango wood, carved pentagram. 14 x 7cm. Weighs 180g. From India.
