Howlite is a borate mineral, chalk-white with grey spiderweb veining, named for the Canadian chemist who described it in 1868. It is soft, porous and takes dye readily — which is why so much of it is sold blue as imitation turquoise. Undyed, it has a quiet look entirely its own.
What howlite is used for
It is the stone for the overactive mind: the tradition gives it to sleep, patience and the easing of anger — the stone people put under the pillow when thoughts won't stop circling. Crown chakra, and the usual companion or alternative to amethyst for insomniacs.
Under the pillow or on the nightstand. Its softness is the reason to keep it away from your keys and harder stones.
How to care for it
Porous — keep dry; cleanse on selenite. Porous, so keep it dry — cleanse it on selenite rather than under a tap.
