The large Moroccan calcite geode, 15 to 18cm across and around three kilos, which puts it in a different class from the hand-sized ones. Cut open, it shows a cavity lined with calcite and selenite crystal, glassy and pale, that fills with light from a window or a lamp set beside it. At this size it is a statement piece for a mantelpiece, a hallway table or a therapy room, the kind of object visitors ask about. Each one is unique: the cavity may be deep or shallow, the crystal fine or chunky, the colour white through to amber. In crystal practice calcite is read as a cleansing, calming stone, and a geode this size is traditionally given a place of its own rather than a spot in a collection.
