Cut from one piece of natural amethyst, which is why the purple pools dark in the brow and thins to a pale lilac along the jaw — it depends entirely on where that shade fell in the original rock. Amethyst is banded rather than evenly coloured, so the carver works with whatever the stone gives them.
It is small, about six centimetres and 26 grams, and the detail across the scales and the brow is worked by hand rather than moulded, so no two come out quite alike. That makes it a pocket piece as much as a shelf piece. It arrives in a black drawstring pouch with a printed information card about the stone, ready to hand over as a present with no further effort from you.
