The Halloween piece that never goes back in the box
A skull carved from amethyst, 5cm long and 26g, with the purple of the stone pooling in the eye sockets and the hollows of the cheeks and paling across the dome where the stone is thinner. The skull is the oldest reminder of mortality there is, and in crystal practice it is read as introspection and the clearing away of what does not matter, while amethyst is the stone of clear thinking and calm, so the pair is a memento mori that settles rather than frightens. It is the size for a desk, a bookshelf, the witchcraft shelf or a cabinet of carvings, and it is the piece bought for Halloween that stays out all year because it is too good to pack away. Each skull is carved individually from natural amethyst, so the depth of colour and the banding differ from one to the next. It is called large in the trade's sizing of these carvings; in the hand it is a palm piece.
Amethyst, hand-carved. 5 x 4 x 3cm. Weighs 26g.
