Rainbow moonstone does its trick edge-on. Turn it slowly under a lamp and a blue sheen floats across the milky body like light moving under water, sliding from one polished face to the next as it goes. The effect is called adularescence, and it comes from layers inside the stone scattering the light.
At 17 x 3cm and around 700g this is the larger of our two obelisk sizes, a real shelf piece, and the six polished faces are what catch a window or a lamp from across a room.
