Sixty amethyst chips hand-wired onto brass branches, growing out of an open ring turned from mango wood, so the tree stands framed inside a circle of pale wood like a moon behind it. The ring is what lifts this from a bonsai-style ornament to a small sculpture, and the pale wood against the purple chips is the point. It is 17cm tall and 320g, a desk or shelf piece, and because each chip is a natural stone the purple varies across the canopy. Amethyst is the stone of calm and protection in crystal practice, and a tree of it is traditionally placed where a room needs settling: a bedroom, a study, a therapy room.
