No two picture stone discs remotely alike
A large Guohua picture stone cut as a disc, around 10cm across and 140g, from the ancient limestone of Guangxi province in China. The patterns on the face look like ink paintings of trees, ferns, mountains or a winter forest, and they are entirely natural: manganese dendrites that crept through cracks in the fine-grained limestone over millions of years, branching as they went, with the rich iron oxide content of the stone giving the warm, parchment-like ground they are drawn on. Nothing is painted and nothing is carved, so no two discs are remotely alike, and the photograph shows the type rather than the exact stone you will receive. Guohua means Chinese painting, and these stones were collected by scholars for centuries as natural art for a desk. This one stands in a small stand or lies flat, and it is the piece for someone who already has every polished crystal.
Natural picture stone, disc cut. Approximately 9 x 2 x 10cm. Weighs 140g. From Guangxi, China.
