The engraving on this one is done by hand, and you can feel it — run a thumb around the rim and the pattern is cut in, not stamped on. The bowl is hand beaten too, which is why the wall thickness varies slightly and why the note has more character than a machine-pressed bowl.
It arrives ready to use rather than ready to assemble: bowl, mallet, cushion and pouch, all in the box. Fourteen centimetres is the size most people settle on, big enough for a long warm note and small enough to keep beside a chair. Rest it on the cushion, strike the rim rather than the base, and let it ring out. If you are buying it for someone else, the pouch does most of the wrapping for you.
