Heavy enough at 870g to anchor a mantelpiece
A large soapstone oil burner, 13cm tall and 10cm across, with an elephant carved into the side and picked out in five harmonising colours against the natural grey-green of the stone, 870g in the hand. It is the biggest and most decorated of the soapstone elephant burners: the dish on top takes fragrance oil on water or a wax melt, the tea light sits in the chamber below, and the warmth lifts the scent while the candlelight shows through the pierced carving and the coloured elephant glows. Soapstone is the traditional material for Indian oil burners because it takes heat without cracking and carves with fine detail, and this one has the weight to anchor a mantel or a hall table. The elephant stands for wisdom, patience and good fortune across India, and the coloured version is the one bought as a housewarming or a new-baby present. Hand-carved and hand-painted in India, so each piece differs. Wipe the dish while it is still warm.
Soapstone, hand-carved and painted elephant. 13 x 10cm. Weighs 870g. From India.
