A carnelian pendulum: a faceted point of the warm orange-red stone that the Egyptians carved into amulets, hung on a silver-plated chain around 170mm long with a small gemstone bead at the end to hold. Dowsing with a pendulum is thought to go back more than six thousand years, with the Egyptians and the ancient Chinese among its earliest practitioners, and the tool has not changed: a weight on a chain, held still, that swings in answer to a question, over a map, a chart, a body or a list. Carnelian is the stone of courage, vitality and creative fire in crystal practice, linked to the sacral chakra, so this is the pendulum for questions about projects, nerve and new beginnings. At 17g it responds to small movements without being jumpy. Each point is cut from natural stone, so the shape and the shade of orange differ from one to the next. Made in India.
