Carnelian is chalcedony — microcrystalline quartz — coloured amber to rust by iron oxide. It has one of the longest unbroken careers of any gem: signet rings in ancient Egypt and Rome were cut from it because hot wax doesn't stick to a polished carnelian seal. A working stone, from the beginning.
What carnelian is used for
It is the stone of getting started: creativity, motivation, appetite for life. Where amethyst settles, carnelian stirs. It goes to the sacral chakra in the tradition, and to Aries — and it is the usual answer when someone asks for a stone for a creative block or a stalled project.
Keep it where the work happens — the studio, the desk, the kitchen. This is not a bedside stone.
How to care for it
Rinse briefly; recharge in sunlight or earth. A brief rinse is fine; it likes sunlight better than the purple quartzes and recharges in it, in the tradition.
