Garnet Meaning, Uses & Care

Garnet is a family of minerals rather than one stone, but the deep wine-red almandine is the one the name conjures — pomegranate-red, which is literally what "garnet" means. Bronze Age graves contain garnet jewellery; it is one of humanity's oldest adornments and it has never once gone out of production.

What garnet is used for

It is the ember stone: passion, devotion, vitality — the one to reach for when drive has gone flat. Where carnelian starts projects, garnet sustains them. The tradition sets it at the root chakra and gives it to January, to Capricorn, and to anyone running on fumes.

Traditionally worn — it is a jewellery stone before a shelf stone, and a small garnet piece carries the point of it.

How to care for it

Rinse gently; recharge in sunlight. Hard-wearing; a gentle rinse and sunlight to recharge, in the tradition.
