A full set of tree agate rune stones in a printed cotton pouch: twenty-five polished stones of white agate with green dendrites branching through them like trees seen from above, twenty-four engraved with the Elder Futhark and one blank. Tree agate is the pale cousin of moss agate, the green held in a milky white ground rather than clear, and in crystal practice it is the stone of steadiness, roots and connection, which makes it a natural match for runes, the alphabet of a people who read the world in trees. Each stone branches differently, so every rune is its own. The letters show well on the white, which makes this one of the easier sets to read on a dark cloth. Runes are the old Germanic alphabet, twenty-four letters that are also words and meanings, cast for divination since the early centuries AD and perhaps far earlier.
