The bedside size of the selenite candle holders
A 10cm cylinder of Moroccan selenite hollowed to take a tea light. Selenite is a form of gypsum that grows in long, fibrous, translucent crystals, and when a candle burns inside a cylinder of it the light glows through the walls in soft stripes and the whole holder looks lit from within. The sides are left rough, with the natural satin sheen and occasional whiter patches of the raw mineral; the top is polished and the base cut flat so it stands square. At 8cm across and 1kg it is a substantial piece for a bedside, a bathroom or an altar. In crystal practice selenite is the stone of cleansing and clarity, linked to the crown, and it is one of the few stones said to clear other crystals, so people set small stones around the base. Keep it dry; selenite softens in water. Each piece varies, being natural.
