Holds a ring, a pair of earrings or a few small stones

A small crescent moon dish carved from a single piece of Moroccan selenite, 10cm along the curve and 3.5cm deep, polished inside and left rough along the outer edge. The crescent is narrow, and that is its use: it fits on a windowsill, along the front of an altar, or in the gap behind a tap where a round bowl will not go, and it holds a ring, a pair of earrings or a few small stones. Selenite is translucent, so the thin curve glows when light comes through it. Keep it dry, as selenite dissolves in water. The moon shape and the moon stone go together: selenite is named for Selene, the Greek moon goddess, and a crescent of it is a natural piece for a lunar ritual or a bedside.

Selenite. 10 x 5 x 3.5cm. Weighs 230g. From Morocco.
