A large white sage and cedar smudge stick, 22cm long and 120g, a dense bundle of white sage with sprigs of cedar bound through it and individually wrapped, from Mexico. White sage and cedar is the classic pairing of the smudging tradition: the sage clears a space of what is stale and the cedar, the tree of protection and blessing in Native American practice, fills it with something clean and resinous afterwards, so a room is both emptied and dressed in one pass. The cedar also softens the dry, sharp smoke of sage alone, which some people find harsh. It is the smudge for a new home, a room after illness, a house after visitors, and the start of a ritual. Light the tip, blow out the flame, let the bundle smoulder and fan the smoke into corners, then press it out in a dish; at this size the bundle lasts for months. Keep a heatproof dish or shell beneath it and open a window afterwards.
