The elephant's outline thrown onto the wall
A soapstone oil burner, 10.5cm tall, with a standing elephant carved into the side, made in India. The burner works the usual way: a few drops of fragrance oil in water in the dish on top, a tea light in the chamber beneath, and the warmth lifts the scent into the room while the candlelight shows through the carving. Soapstone is the traditional material for Indian oil burners because it takes heat without cracking and carves with fine detail, and this one is a larger, heavier piece than the standard burners at 718g, with the earthy grey-green tones and natural veining of the stone showing through. The elephant stands for wisdom, patience and good fortune across India, and a standing one, trunk down, is the traditional posture of steadiness. Wipe the dish while warm. A calm piece for a bedside, a hallway or a meditation corner.
Soapstone, hand-carved. 10.5 x 7.5cm. Weighs 718g. From India.
