A sandstone oil burner carved with abstract cuts, geometric slots and angles through the stone, so that the tea light inside throws bars of light onto the wall, hand-carved in Jogja, Java, the city whose stone carvers have made Buddhas for the temples of the island for centuries. Sandstone has a warm, grainy, matte surface that ceramic cannot imitate, and at 560g the burner sits heavily and steadily on a table. The dish on top takes fragrance oil on water or a wax melt, the tea light goes in the chamber beneath, and the warmth lifts the scent into the room. It is the burner for a spa, a hotel room or a home that runs to stone, linen and plants, and it is carved by hand, so the cuts and the tone of the stone vary from piece to piece. Wipe the dish while warm; the stone itself needs nothing. The square Moorish burner on the same shelf is its sibling.
Sandstone, hand-carved, with dish. 7 x 7 x 10cm. Weighs 560g. From Indonesia.
