A square sandstone oil burner carved with a Moorish lattice, the interlocking geometric screen of Islamic architecture cut through the stone so that the tea light inside throws the pattern onto the wall, hand-carved in Jogja, Java, the city of stone carvers who have made the temple Buddhas of the island for centuries. Sandstone is warm, grainy and matte, and the square form with its lattice reads as a miniature of a riad window; at 560g it sits heavily on a table. The dish on top takes fragrance oil on water or a wax melt, the tea light goes beneath, and the warmth carries the scent. It is the burner for a spa, a hotel or a home that runs to stone and linen, and it is carved by hand, so the lattice and the tone of the stone vary from piece to piece. Wipe the dish while warm. The abstract cuts burner on the same shelf is its sibling.
Sandstone, hand-carved, with dish. 7 x 7 x 9cm. Weighs 560g. From Indonesia.
