A reading cloth does three jobs: it gives the cards a clean surface so they are not laid on a kitchen table or a bedspread, it marks out the reading space so the ritual has an edge, and it protects the cards from grease and crumbs. This one carries the Tree of Life, the symbol of growth, connection and the link between earth and sky that runs through almost every tradition and through the Kabbalistic structure some readers use with the tarot itself.
