A Nepalese alloy bowl that ends a yoga class
A Tibetan singing bowl, 16cm across and 780g, engraved inside and out with the Buddha seated beneath the Bodhi tree, the tree under which he reached enlightenment, made in Nepal from the traditional alloy of brass, copper bronze, iron and silver. The engraving is the decoration; the alloy is the voice. Struck on the rim with the stick the bowl gives a deep ringing note that hangs in the room, and circled with the wooden end it begins to sing, a sustained tone with overtones rising over it that settles a room and the people in it, and that is why these bowls have moved from the monasteries of the Himalayas into yoga studios, sound baths and bedrooms. It is the bowl for a meditation practice, the start and end of a yoga class, or a treatment room, and it is the one chosen for its Buddhist imagery by people whose practice follows that path. Supplied with its striker. Each bowl is hand-finished, so the engraving and the tone differ slightly.
Brass, copper bronze, iron and silver alloy, engraved. 16 x 8cm. Weighs 780g. From Nepal.
