For a practice built on chanting rather than images
A Tibetan singing bowl, 16cm across and 790g, engraved with a mantra in Tibetan script running around the bowl, made in Nepal from the traditional alloy of brass, copper bronze, iron and silver. The mantra is the one chanted in Himalayan practice, and engraved on the bowl it is sounded rather than spoken each time the bowl is played: struck on the rim with the stick for a deep ringing note, or circled with the wooden end until the bowl sings, a sustained tone with overtones rising over it that settles a room and the people in it. These bowls have moved from the monasteries into yoga studios, sound baths and bedrooms, and this one suits a meditation practice, the opening and closing of a class, or a treatment room. It is the choice for readers who want the sacred text rather than a figure on their bowl. Supplied with its striker. Each bowl is hand-finished, so the engraving and the tone differ slightly from one to the next.
Brass, copper bronze, iron and silver alloy, engraved mantra. 16 x 9.5cm. Weighs 790g. From Nepal.
