Hand-carved mango wood with a grain of its own
A mango wood bowl carved with the symbols of the four elements, earth, air, fire and water, 14cm across and 7cm tall, made for the altar: a smudge stick rests in it while it smoulders, the ash falls into it, and between smudgings it holds salt, herbs, tumble stones or an offering. The organic look of the wood gives an altar a grounded, serene feel that ceramic and metal do not, and the four elements carving marks this bowl for a practice that works by the quarters, the one used for casting a circle, where a bowl that names all four is the bowl for the centre. Mango wood is dense and warm, cut sustainably from orchard trees after they stop fruiting, and the carving is done by hand in India, so each bowl carries its own grain and the cuts vary a little. Keep a smouldering stick on the bowl's base rather than its rim and it will last for years. At 180g it sits steadily.
