Rest a smudge stick and catch every bit of its ash
A large mango wood bowl carved with the Tree of Life, 14cm across and 7cm tall, made for the altar: a smudge stick rests in it while it smoulders, the ash falls into it, and between smudgings it holds salt, herbs, tumble stones or an offering. The Tree of Life, roots and branches joined, is the symbol of growth and connection in almost every tradition, so this is the bowl that suits any practice and the one chosen for a shared or a family altar, or for a first altar where no particular path has been settled on. A tree carved in wood is the most natural pairing on the shelf, and the organic look of the mango wood gives an altar a grounded, serene feel. The wood is dense and warm, cut sustainably from orchard trees past fruiting, and the carving is done by hand in India, so each bowl has its own grain and the tree varies. This is the large size; the small Tree of Life bowl is 12cm. At 180g it sits steadily.
