Citrine is quartz coloured yellow to amber by iron, and honest shops will tell you that most affordable citrine is actually amethyst that has been heat-treated to gold — the two are the same mineral, and heat flips the colour. Natural untreated citrine is scarcer and paler.
What citrine is used for
Either way, it is the sun stone: optimism, confidence, prosperity. The folk name is "the merchant's stone" — shopkeepers kept a piece in the till for trade. People place it in workspaces and wallets, and the tradition ties it to the solar plexus and to Leo season energy.
A tumbled piece by the till, on the desk, or wherever the work happens. It is bought as often for someone starting a business as for anything mystical.
How to care for it
Self-cleansing; a quick moonlight bath keeps it bright. Being quartz it is robust, but the golden colour can pale with long direct sun — a little irony in a sun stone.
