Kyanite Meaning, Uses & Care

Kyanite is an aluminium silicate that grows in blue blades — the name is from the Greek for blue, the same root as cyan — with a strange property: its hardness differs along and across the blade, which makes it a nightmare to cut and a favourite of collectors. Blue is classic; orange and green exist.

What kyanite is used for

Modern tradition holds it as the aligner: the stone that clears blockages and brings the chakras into line — and, unusually, one of the very few stones said never to need cleansing, because it does not hold what passes through it. It is recommended for meditation practices and for smoothing the way into new situations.

A blade on the desk or in the meditation corner. Handle it gently and it will outlast rougher stones handled roughly.

How to care for it

Self-clearing; keep dry, it's bladed and fragile. Self-clearing, in the tradition — and physically fragile: keep it dry, and don't flex the blades.
