A seated Buddha carved from jade, 5cm tall, 4cm wide and 2cm deep, 26g: a pocket Buddha, a desk Buddha, the one that lives in a dish of tumble stones or on a windowsill beside a plant. The carving is fine for the size, with the folds of the robe and the calm of the face cut cleanly, and the jade is the soft mottled green of the stone, lighter where it thins. Jade has been the stone of purity, wisdom and good fortune in China for three thousand years, carved into exactly this kind of small figure to be carried and handled, and in crystal practice it keeps that reading: the steady, lucky stone. The Buddha is the figure for a meditation corner, a car dashboard, a bedside or a first altar. It is called large in the trade's own sizing of these carvings; in the hand it is small and precious. Each figure is carved individually, so the green and the face vary a little.
