A large Madagascar labradorite stone, 550 to 750g and 11 to 14cm across, polished on its face to show the flash the stone is famous for: blue, green and gold moving across the grey as the piece turns in the light. Labradorite's colour comes from light bouncing between thin layers inside the stone, so it appears and vanishes with the angle, and a piece this size has whole sheets of it; held under a lamp and tilted, it goes from dull grey to electric blue and back. It is a statement specimen for a mantel, a desk or the centre of a collection, and the one bought by someone who already has a small labradorite and wants the real thing. In crystal practice labradorite is the stone of intuition and the hidden, the stone for seeing what is not on the surface, which the flash illustrates rather well. Every stone differs in colour, pattern, size and weight from the one pictured.
